10th Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne 9th March – 9th April 2017From digital labour to the sharing economy, the world of work is being reconfigured; the 10th Biennale explores shifting work paradigms.

The 10th Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne, from the 9th March to 9th April 2017, will once again be an illustration of the dynamics of the singular ecosystem at work in the Saint-Etienne district, with its design and art school, a research and innovation centre and an international event.

This Biennale will present a state of the art and a great experiment, a giant laboratory, entitled Working Promesse, focused on shifting work paradigms. From digital labour to the sharing economy, the world of work is being reconfigured; it is inventing new organisations, new services but also new struggles and new hopes. Designers, companies and the entire Saint-Etienne territory will gather in 2017 around this topic in order to confront different perspectives, ideologies, innovations and desires.

AN INTERNATIONAL BIENNALE…

Detroit, Guest of Honour

Detroit “motor city” became the symbol of industrial growth, before falling victim to the crisis that began in the 1960s and culminated with its bankruptcy in 2013. To rebuild, Detroit chose the option of entrepreneurship, creativity and community. Today, the city boasts the highest concentration of industrial and commercial designers in the United States. Detroit is renowned for the effervescence of its music scene, where great punk, techno and soul performers made their names. The creative industries are a growing sector of the economy. Detroit is reinventing itself and joined the UNESCO Creative Cities network in December 2015. For its 10th edition the Biennale has invited Detroit to be its Guest of Honour so that it can share its experience as a resilient city, in the midst of shifting work paradigms.

Human Cities _Challenging the City Scale/ Saint-Etienne 2017

Project proposed by: Josyane Franc, Director of International Relations and her team, as well as Nathalie Arnould, Design Manager for local authorities.

Challenging the "urban scale" and looking at the co-creation of the city, Human Cities_Challenging the City Scale brings together 12 European partners led by the Cité du design as part of the European Union's Creative Europe/Culture 2014-2018 programme. The experiments conducted by international and local partners are presented in the Human Cities exhibition-lab on the Cité du design site and in a dedicated space in Rue de la République. An urban trail links these sites and the initiatives of the Saint-Etienne collectives in the Crêt de Roch and Beaubrun neighbourhoods.

A BIENNALE … DEDICATED TO THE BUSINESS WORLD: BIENNALE TO BUSINESS

The 10th edition of the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne will confirm the Cité du design's commitment to the business world and its economic positioning. On this occasion, it has set up a reinforced support system to encourage companies to take part through the exhibitions and experiments, or by organizing events dedicated to professionals. This year the Business week is broken up into four main sections: an opening day, the 3rd edition of the Design & Innovation Forum, Networking events and businesses & users workshops on the topic of the social and solidarity economy.
