The Joseph Binder Award is an international competition with a focus on graphic design and illustration and was first launched in 1996 by designaustria, the interest organization and knowledge centre for design in Austria. It is named after one of the most outstanding graphic designers and illustrators active in Austria between the two World Wars, who subsequently also revolutionized visual communication in the United States.
Joseph Binder’s motto was: “In design, everything has a function. Design has a representational function. Design has a communicational function. Design has a motivational function.” Graphic designers, illustrators, and students enrolled in relevant courses from all over the world are invited to enter their works realized in 2014 and after by 29 February (early bird) or 17 April 2016.
The Joseph Binder Award is held every two years. The entries are assessed by an international jury of experts. Previous jury panels included such recognized authorities as Cordula Alessandri, Lo Breier, Gerd Dumbar, Fons Hickmann, Freda Sack, Stefan Sagmeister, Niklaus Troxler, and Lars Müller. This year’s motif of the Joseph Binder Award was designed by 100und1, a Vienna-based design agency. “Everything is three-dimensional” – the motto of this year’s call for entries is borrowed from one of Joseph Binder’s quotes, which inspired the graphic designers of 100und1 in their design for the visual appearance of JBA16. “What is your dimension?”, they wonder.
